Reactive, Not Aggressive: Your Dog Isn’t Broken

Let’s get one thing straight—reactive does not mean aggressive, and it definitely doesn’t mean your dog is bad, broken, or beyond help.

If walks feel like a tactical mission, if your dog goes full banshee at the sight of another pup, or if your neighbours cross the street when they see you coming…

Welcome. You’re in the right place.

Because reactivity isn't a personality flaw. It’s a stress response.

What Reactivity Actually Is

Reactivity is your dog saying, “I’m overwhelmed and don’t know what else to do right now.” Whether it’s barking, lunging, growling, or even freezing, reactive behaviour is often rooted in fear, frustration, or over-arousal. It does not stem from them trying to be “dominant” or “bad.”

Your dog isn’t trying to embarrass you. (Even though it really feels like it when someone’s giving you that look.)

Why Quick Fixes Don’t Work

There’s a lot of garbage advice out there:

  • “Yank the leash.”

  • “Make them submit.”

  • “They’re just trying to be alpha.”

Let’s throw that whole mindset in the trash. You can’t punish your way to calm. And you shouldn’t have to.

At Ideal Canine, we focus on building skills and emotional resilience. We help your dog feel safer, more confident, and more connected to you—so they can actually cope with the world, not just white-knuckle their way through it.

It’s About the Nervous System, Not Just Obedience

You could have the most perfectly timed “sit” cue in the world, and it still wouldn’t stop your dog from spiralling if their nervous system is screaming, “DANGER!” That’s why we teach more than "commands"—we teach regulation, observation, and choice.

Calm isn’t taught through control. It’s shaped through understanding and trust.

Real Talk: You’re Not Failing

If your dog’s reactivity has left you crying after a walk (been there), canceling plans, or wondering if you’re cut out for this… I want you to know something:

You’re not a bad dog owner. You don’t have a bad dog. You just need a plan that’s built for dogs like yours.

And that’s exactly what I do.

Ready to Get Started?

If you’re ready to: Stop feeling ashamed of your dog’s behaviour

Start understanding what’s really going on under the surface

And build a calm, confident partnership…

You’re my kind of human.
